This year, the most photographed hotel in the world will celebrate its 125 years of activity. This is of course the famous Chateau Frontenac located in the heart of Old Quebec. On this occasion, the establishment has planned many activities during 2018.

Before we dwell on it, let’s take a look back at the singular history of this atypical hotel.

The hotel takes its name from Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, who was the governor of New France from 1672 to 1682 and between 1689 and 1698.

Chateau Frontenac was one of the first “castle” style hotels built by Canadian railways companies to popularize rail travel. The construction of the hotel began in 1892 and it was the plans of the architect who built Windsor Station in Montreal.

The hotel was very successful when it opened and was expanded several times thereafter. Chateau Frontenac hosted the 1943 Quebec Conference (in French : La conférence de Québec), in which Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt discussed the strategy to be adopted during the Second World War.

Let us get back to the 125 years of the hotel and its festivities. The culmination of these will be, without doubt, the ball on December 18, 2018 that will highlight for the 125 years of the castle. In addition to the famous slide located on the terrace Duffrin, an ice rink will allow the amateurs of slides to indulge in their favorite activity with the view on the St. Lawrence River. Other activities will take place during the Quebec Winter Carnival and a “Spring Festival” where music will be honored.

Obviously, gastronomy will also have its place during these festivities in August. While in September, a big harvest festival will be organized.

In addition to the festivities specific to the Chateau Frontenac, the usual activities will not be missed with the Quebec Winter Carnival or the Quebec City  Summer Festival.

In short, if you want to visit Quebec City, the year 2018 is, without question, the best year to do so.
